Bio: Travis was born in DeSmet. He attended school in Brookings until moving to Egan in 1983. He was a member of the first graduating class from Colman-Egan High School in 1992.

Travis was active in football, basketball and track. He attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, Dakota State University in Madison and graduated in 1997 from South Dakota State University in Brookings with a teaching degree and coaching certification.

He went to work for the Rapid City Juvenile Detention Center and in November of 1999, he began working for the Larimer County Detention Center in Fort Collins where he was a booking deputy, firearms instructor and in the SERT Team. He owned two special dogs, Aspen and Nikita.

Summary: Deputy Sass was killed in an automobile accident on U.S. 287 while he and a fellow deputy were en route to a department shooting range.

A vehicle collided into the passenger side of their patrol car as they turned left off of U.S. 287. Deputy Sass, who was a passenger in the car, was transported to Poudre Valley Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The other deputy was injured in the accident.

Deputy Sass had served with the Larimer County Sheriff's Department for 4.5 years, and was assigned to the Larimer County Detention Center.
