Sergeant John Shine responded to a call of a gunman terrorizing a neighborhood. The gunman killed one woman, wounded two men and ran through the streets brandishing a pistol. The offender then barricaded himself in his apartment. Sgt. Shine went to the apartment and demanded entry. The gunman fired through the door, striking the sergeant. Sgt. Shine died in the hospital two hours later.
The suspect was executed in 1906. Sergeant Shine is survived by his wife and daughter.
