Patrolman James Sweeney and Patrolman Brannon were shot and killed by a group of vagrants they had just arrested from the Kansas City Railroad yards. As the Patrolmen were transporting the group of suspects to jail the suspects turned on them with guns and shot and killed both patrolmen.
Patrolman Sweeney is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Joplin, Missouri.
