Officer Hunt was shot and killed after he and his partner responded to a robbery at a local store. During the exchange of gunfire one of the suspects was wounded. The suspect was apprehended in Delaware for another robbery but escaped from prison. He was then again arrested in Rhode Island for a robbery and sentenced to 25 years. When he was pardoned by the Rhode Island Governor in 1914 he was released from jail but arrested by St. Louis detectives and returned to Missouri to face murder charges.
