Bio: Sergeant Morales was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had served with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office for 13 years.
He was born in Bronx, N.Y., and moved to Port St. Lucie in 1999. He served in the Air Force, where he received the Air Force Achievement Medal, Outstanding Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Long Tour Ribbon Longevity Service Award Ribbon and Air Force Training Ribbon.
He earned a master’s degree in criminal justice from Keiser University. He was employed by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office for 12 years and recently was promoted to Sergeant Deputy. He received the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Medal of Honor-Posthumously, Exceptional Duty, Unit Citation, Good Conduct, September 2004-Hurricane Medal.
Sgt. Gary Morales, 35, died Feb. 28, 2013 at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ruben Rodriguez, and grandparents, Enrigue Morales and Conchita Roman. |

Summary: |
Sergeant Gary Morales was shot and killed while making a traffic stop in the 3200 block of Naylor Terrace, near Edwards Road, at approximately 9:30 am.
During the stop a subject exited the stopped vehicle and opened fire, striking Sergeant Morales as he sat his in his patrol car. He was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute where he was pronounced dead.
The subject was taken into custody.
