Bio: James 'Jim' Crowley, beloved son of Zita C. and the late James B. Crowley, attended Mount Carmel High School (Class of 1983) and embodied the Mount Carmel creed of living with zeal for God, for life, and for learning.
Upon graduating, Jim attended the University of Illinois at Chicago and joined the Chicago Police Department in 1986, proudly wearing Star 4169. Jim suffered a catastrophic brain injury and was unable to walk after the accident, but he maintained his ardent work ethic and amazing sense of humor throughout his life. Jim lived in a Texas group home for the last 23 years where he received loving and compassionate care. Jim’s sister Beth was a constant source of comfort, love and support to Jim and was his devoted advocate throughout the last 37 years. |

Patrolman Jim Crowley succumbed to injuries he received on September 4, 1987, when a drunk driver struck his patrol car.
Patrolman Crowley, Patrolman William Morrison, and three other officers were working special assignment for Public Housing North and were en route to a call of a juvenile with a gun. While traveling westbound on 15th Street, a car traveling northbound on Ashland Avenue broadsided their patrol car at 8:15 p.m.
Three officers were taken to local hospitals and released. Patrolman Morrisson was pronounced dead on arrival at Cook County Hospital. Patrolman Crowley was transported to the University of Illinois Research Hospital with severe head trauma. Due to his injuries, he was unable to walk and was confined to a wheelchair. He passed away from his injuries almost 37 years later.

The driver was convicted of reckless homicide and driving under the influence and was sentenced to three years. |
