Officer Mia Goodwin was killed when a tractor-trailer struck her patrol car on southbound I-85 near W.T. Harris Boulevard.
She was blocking traffic on the interstate at the scene of a previous crash when the tractor-trailer struck her patrol car at about 3:30 am.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Unit charged 50-year-old Daniel Leon Morgan in the deadly crash that killed CMPD Officer Mia Goodwin on Wednesday, December 22nd 2021.
Investigators say Morgan was operating a 2020 Volvo VNL and failed to move left to a single open lane of travel on I-85 South. Mr. Morgan failed to reduce speed and struck, four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department vehicles, a semi-truck and Officer Goodwin.
