Summary: |
Deputy Sheriff Jacob Keltner was shot and killed as he and other members of the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force attempted to serve an arrest warrant in Rockford, Illinois.
The task force located the subject at a hotel at 747 North Bell School Road. They were attempting to arrest the man at 9:15 a.m. when he opened fire with a rifle, striking a woman who was staying with him. Brown apparently jumped out the third-floor window and shot Deputy Keltner in the parking lot, then jumped in his car and sped off. Keltner suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The man then fled from the hotel and led officers on a pursuit that lasted over 150 miles.
An alert to police agencies said he might have been armed with an AK-47.
An Illinois State Police mobile command unit and at least one SWAT vehicle was set up on I-55 near Exit 133, surrounded by dozens of cars parked in both the northbound and southbound lanes of the interstate.
Some vehicles sat in the grassy median between the two lanes of the highway. The highway cuts through flat fields in a mostly rural area. Visibility was low at times as light snow fell during the afternoon.
The vehicle became disabled on I-55 near Lincoln and the subject was taken into custody after barricading himself inside of it for several hours.
Deputy Keltner was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds approximately six hours after being shot.
