Fatal Incident Summary
Offender: Ian David Long :: Caucasian / Male - 28 years old
Posted on social media during the deadly rampage.

Long, 28, first posted on Instagram at 11:24 p.m: 'It's too bad I won't get to see all the illogical and pathetic reasons people will put in my mouth as to why I did it,' the military veteran said in the post. 'Fact is I had no reason to do it, and I just thought....(exploitive), life is boring so why not?' Long posted.

Three minutes later Long posted, 'I hope people call me insane (two smiley face emojiis) would that just be a big ball of irony? Yeah... I'm insane, but the only thing you people do after these shootings is 'hopes and prayers'...or 'keep you in my thoughts'.'

He added, 'Every time...and wonder why these keep happening... --(two smiley face emojis).'

Summary: Sergeant Ron Helus was shot and killed after responding to an active shooter at a bar at 99 Rolling Oaks Drive in Thousand Oaks.

When he arrived, Sergeant Helus heard gunfire coming from inside the bar, which at the start of the shooting rampage was occupied by nearly 200 college students. He and a California Highway Patrol officer immediately made entry into the bar and confronted the shooter, but Sergeant Helus was shot and severely wounded. The other officer was able to pull Sergeant Helus from the building and provided medical aid.

Sergeant Helus was taken to a Los Robles Regional Medical Center where he died from his wounds. Eleven citizens were also shot and killed in the incident, and numerous others were wounded.

The suspect was later found dead inside the bar from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
