Bio: Mathew Mazany was born in Warrensville Hts. Mathew proudly served the Mentor Police Department over the last 14 years. Mat graduated from Crossroads Christian Academy in 1995. He went on to graduate from Tri-C's police academy in 2002.
Mat enjoyed smoking cigars, traveling and riding his motorcycle. He was also a sports car enthusiast. His charm and sense of humor left lasting impressions on all the lives he touched.
He was a proud and loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and dear friend. A tremendous loss is felt by all of those who were blessed and honored to know him. |

Summary: |
Officer Mathew Mazany was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while assisting another officer during a traffic stop on Route 2, near Route 306, at approximately 1:00 am.
The vehicle that had been stopped contained a subject wanted in another jurisdiction. As the officers began to approach the car to take the person into custody another vehicle entered the area and struck Officer Mazany. He was treated by officers and firefighters at the scene and was taken to the TriPoint Medical Center, where he succombed to his injuries.
The vehicle, a late-model Jeep Wrangler, fled the scene after striking Officer Mazany but was located several hours later and the driver(Brian Anthony) was taken into custody.

Subj. Anthony told authorities that he was not aware that he hit someone along the highway. He was charged with leaving the scene and evidence tampering. The Judge set his bond at $1M. |
