Bio: Carolyn was born in Washington, DC, graduated from Coolidge High School and the University of the District of Columbia. She was Deputy Director of Operations for the DC Department of Corrections from 2011 until her passing. Her 35-year career included serving as the first female supervisor at the Youth Center II, Deputy Warden and Warden of the Correctional Treatment Facility and Warden positions in Lake City, Florida and Lawrenceville, Virginia.

Carolyn also previously served as the warden at the Lorton complex in Virginia. Although Cross had retired, she returned to the department three years ago when Faust took over,(Thomas Faust, director)

Summary: Deputy Director Carolyn Cross was beaten to death inside her apartment in the 4800 block of Kenmore Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia.

She was preparing to leave her apartment to represent the District of Columbia Department of Corrections at a conference in Atlanta, Georgia, when the subject attacked her. He struck her approximately 15 times with a heavy wrench and then strangled her.

Deputy Director Cross' daughter found her body when she arrived at the apartment to drive her to the airport.

The subject who murdered her was located a short time later after attempting to commit suicide. The subj. returned to his apartment and was discovered by officers lying in the fetal position wearing just his underwear having attempted suicide. He confessed immediately to the crime.

Deputy Director Cross had served with the District of Columbia Department of Corrections for 30 years. She is survived by her husband and four children.

Disposition: After two hung juries, the Prosecutors agreed to a not guilty by reason of insanity verdict and he was committed to a state mental hospital.
