Bio: Nathan was born in Chula Vista, CA to Harold & Elizabeth Van Oort. After high school Nathan went to New Tribes Mission Bible School in Waukesha, WI where he met his wife Virginia (Swiger).

Nathan and Virginia married August 14, 1982 and later continued their studies at New Tribes Mission cultural studies in Jersey Shore, PA, and New Tribes Mission Language studies in Camdenton, MO. Nathan served as a paratrooper in the Army and then worked for WHCA the White House Communications Agency for President Clinton.

He deployed for 13 months to Balad, Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was a police officer for Ohio University until he was injured by lightning during a run for the Special Olympics in June 2006. He loved biking, jogging, camping, ham radio, playing his guitar and singing.

Nathan was a member of Porterfield Baptist Church in Porterfield, OH for 6 years and a member of Albany Baptist Church in Albany, OH for 12 years.

Summary: Police Officer Nathan Van Oort succumbed to injuries sustained nine years earlier when he was struck by lightning while representing the Ohio University Police Department in the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run.

The group of participants had stopped at a preschool, at 28841 Chieftan Drive in Logan, and were inside a picnic shelter when the lightning strike occurred. Other officers on scene performed CPR for 20 minutes until he was stabilized enough for transport to a local hospital. Several other officers and participants were injured.

Officer Van Oort never fully recovered from his injuries and passed away as a result on November 7th, 2015.
