Bio: Vernell Brown Jr. graduated with an engineering degree in 1989 from Grambling State University, where he played snare drum in the marching band.

He joined the NOPD in 1998. After finishing the police academy, he was assigned to the 2nd District and spent most of his career in the Traffic Division.

Brown, who was considered an expert in traffic fatality reconstructions for both civil and criminal court cases.

Summary: Police Officer Vernell Brown succumbed to injuries sustained five days earlier when he was struck by a car on U.S. 90, on the I-10 East split, while investigating a separate car fire.

The incident happened Sunday (July 12) at the U.S. 90-Interstate 10 East split around 5:30 a.m. Authorities said the 28-year-old driver of a Ford Mustang crashed into a Toyota Scion, before striking Brown. The drivers of both cars also suffered minor injuries.

He was training two police recruits at the scene of the vehicle fire when two other vehicles were involved in a crash on the adjacent roadway. One of the vehicles veered off the road and struck Officer Brown. He was transported to a local hospital where he remained in a coma until succumbing to his injuries.
