Summary: Police Officer Wenjian Liu and Police Officer Rafael Ramos were shot and killed from ambush while sitting in their patrol car at the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and Thompkins Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Both officers were participating in an anti-terrorism drill when at 2:40 pm Ismaaiyl Brinsley walked up to their patrol car while they were parked at 98 Tompkins Ave., and opened fire with a handgun, striking them both in the head and upper body multiple times. The Officers never even had a chance to pull their weapons, and indeed may never have even seen Brinsley coming.

Other officers followed Brinsley as he fled, entering a G train subway station, Myrtle-Willoughby Avs, and went to westbound subway platform. When cornered, Brinsley shot himself in the head with a silver, semi-automatic firearm, which was recovered near the body. Brinsley died on the scene.

The subject was a gang member from Baltimore, Maryland, who had traveled to New York City specifically to ambush police officers. The man had published his intentions on social media prior to the shooting.

Disposition: The killings came at a time in history when racial unrest was exacerbated by political derision and devisiveness from no less, the newly elected Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio. The Mayor fueled racial unrest and tensions by, in addition to his anti-police racially slanted political speeches, walking in a demonstration that shut down the Brooklyn Bridge and evolved into a riot, injuring two police officers. The demonstration was aimed at the NYPD, which many believed the Mayor had totally abandoned and thrown his own police department under the bus. Indeed, many thought the Mayor and racial instigator Al Sharpton directly contributed to this police 'execution' by creating and fueling a culture of anti-police sentiment.

These killings came two months after a black male axe-wielding maniac, Zale Thompson, attacked a group of NYPD officers. He wounded two but was shot dead by the other cops who were present.
