Bio: Lisa Dianne Bryant was born on May 26, 1970, in Santa Paula, CA,to Charles and Janice Bryant.
Lisa grew up in Fillmore, CA, and attended the public schools there. She graduated from Fillmore H.S. in 1988.
Lisa Bryant married Scott A. Whitney. The couple lived in Oxnard CA at the time of Lisa's death and had just moved into a new home they shared with their dogs, Wrangler and Buddy.
Lisa Bryant began working for the Ventura County Sheriff's Office in Jan., 1989, at the age of 18 as a clerk. She was hired as a Deputy Sheriff trainee on March 4, 1990, at the age of 19 and was promoted to deputy sheriff on Aug. 5, 1990, at the age of 20, after graduating from the Sheriff's Academy.
She was named Patrol Officer of the Year in 1996 while a road deputy. She worked at Honor Farm jail in Ojai.
Deputy Whitney, known for her drug-related arrests and "detailed reports," was promoted to senior deputy on July 27, 1997.
Deputy Whitney, an 8-year veteran, was assigned to the Special Services Sexual Assault Dept. as a sex crimes investigator shortly before her death.
Deputy Whitney, "an animal-lover and avid equestrian," had been a member of the Mounted Enforcement Unit and the Mounted Color Guard since 1993. Lisa was a certified mounted patrol instructor and had worked "throughout California" as a certified trainer. She had been offered a position as an instructor for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police after attending their training academy. Her police horse, Duke, served as the "riderless horse" at her funeral. |

Summary: |
Just before 7:00PM on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, Deputy Whitney was on on-duty and on her way to an interview in Camarillo when she was "broadsided" at the intersection of Telephone and Hill roads (near the Ventura County Government Center) in Ventura. A power outage ten minutes earlier had disabled the signal light at the intersection and motorists in both directions were, according to CA law, treating the disabled light as a four-way stop sign. Suddenly a red pickup truck "ran through" (i.e., did not stop) the intersection and broadsided Deputy Whitney's unmarked sheriff's car.
Whitney's car was hit directly on the driver's side, "causing the door to bend over the driver." The force of the impact wedged Whitney between the door and the center console. Donna Hill, a nurse who was stoped at the intersection, rushed to Whitney after the accident but felt no pulse on the deputy. Ventura County Fire Dept. and Ventura Police officers arrived and administered CPR while they pried the door off.
