Summary: |
Officer Michael Gordon was killed when the squad car he was riding in was struck by a vehicle being operated by an intoxicated driver.
Officer Gordon and his partner were on patrol as they approached the intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Sacramento Avenue. When they entered the intersection, a vehicle struck the squad car. Both officers were ejected.
Officer Gordon was transported to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His partner was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and listed in critical condition.
The driver of the other vehicle died during surgery from injuries sustained in the collision. Test results showed he had a blood alcohol level of .177, which is over twice the legal limit in Illinois.
Officer Gordon was a two year veteran of the Chicago Police Department and was assigned to the Harrison District Station. He previously served for two years as a police officer with the Riverside, Illinois Police Department, and as an airborne military police officer in the U.S. Army.
Officer Gordon is survived by his wife, four children, and parents. Officer Gordons father is a retired assistant chief of the Riverside Police Department. Three of Officer Gordon's relatives also service with the Chicago Police Department; a brother, a cousin, and an uncle.
