Deputy Raczkoski was shot and killed while checking on a suspicious person using a pay phone in front of a closed convenience store at 0300 hours. While waiting for a cab to pick the man up a handgun fell from the man's pants. The suspect picked up the handgun and, as Deputy Raczkoski attempted to take cover behind his patrol car, shot him five times in the back. The man was apprehended in Albany two days later.
The suspect, an ex-convict out of prison for five months, was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death.
