Fatal Incident Summary

Jennings grabbed Ofcr. Mancini’s gun and shot the three policemen.

Summary: Officer Eugene Hooper was shot killed while searching a vehicle on the Akron Expressway in connection with the armed robbery of a service station.

Officer Mancini, Officer Eugene Hooper and Reserve Officer Harold Wintrow pulled over a couple of robbery suspects.

While taking the suspects into custody, one of the suspects(Charles Jennings) was able to grab Officer Manicini's service weapon and opened fire. Jennings shot all three Officers.

Officer Hooper was fatally wounded. Officer Manicini and Reserve Officer Wintrow were critically wounded and left paralyzed. A truck driver who came upon the scene used their police radio to call for help

Disposition: Both suspects were captured at their apartment four hours later.

Charles Jennings, who admitted to the robbery and shooting, was convicted of first degree murder and attempted murder and sentenced to two life terms in prison. He was denied parole in 2010. His next parole hearing is in 2014.

He is now 72 and remains incarcerated at the Allen Correctional Institute.

His accomplice, Terrance Landry Jr., who testified against Jennings at trial, was convicted of second degree murder. He was paroled in 1977.
