Summary: Probationary Officer Gary Tedesco and Sergeant Peter Voto were shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call at a local bar.

A neighbor thought someone was shooting off fireworks. He called the police with a noise complaint at 2:30 a.m.

Sgt. Voto and Trainee Tedesco responded to Angel Bar, a seamy roadhouse bar on a stretch of Route 46 that used to be called “Sin Strip.”

Sgt. Voto entered the bar — leaving behind Tedesco, a probationary officer who could not carry a weapon — and was immediately ambushed by Frank Falco and Thomas Trantino, who were there to celebrate a successful robbery earlier in Brooklyn.

They pistol whipped Sgt. Voto, forced him to undress, after he had discovered their gun behind the bar, wrapped in a towel. It was being stored there after they had shot it off in the bar in celebration, sparking the original noise complaint.

When Voto did not return, Tedesco went into the bar and was also ambushed.

Both were tortured and killed execution style.

Disposition: A dragnet found Frank Falco across the Hudson River, in a hotel near Times Square. New York police said he resisted when they woke him, and they had no choice but to shoot him six times.

The second, Trantino, Trantino had enough sense to turn himself in. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death, but was released by the New Jersey State Supreme Court in 2001 after serving 37 years.

His original death penalty conviction was overturned in 1972 when the death penalty was declared unconstitutional and his sentence was changed to life in prison. In 1972, life in prison meant a prisoner came up for parole the first time after 15 years.
