Summary: |
At approximately 11:00 p.m., Henderson County Precinct 8 Deputy Constable Elvis O. Brown, while on duty and on his police motorcycle, was driving westbound on Texas Highway 31, between Malakoff and Trinidad. Deputy Constable Brown attempted to pass a small delivery truck that was stopped in the roadway, possibly without its lights on. Brown's motorcycle struck the rear of the vehicle, and Brown received fatal head and chest injuries. The driver of the truck took Deputy Constable Brown to a Corsicana clinic where Brown died the next morning at 7:00 a.m. on June 17, 1937.
Two hours before his fatal motorcycle accident Deputy Constable E.O. Brown and Henderson County Constable D. D. Billings responded to the report of a disturbance at the residence of William Baker in Malakoff. As the two officers approached the residence, William Baker, 47, came out on the front porch and fired a shotgun at the two officers. As Baker was reloading his shotgun, both Deputy Constable Brown and Constable Billings each fired one shot at Baker. William Baker was shot in the heart and killed instantly. Justice of the Peace W. F. Young returned an inquest verdict that Baker died while resisting arrest.
Deputy Constable Elvis O. Brown was survived by his wife and a son. Brown is buried in Section D, Row 9, Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.
