Sergeant Bigus was shot and killed after responding to a robbery at the local gas company. The suspect had managed to slip into a nearby department store when the officers arrived. Sergeant Bigus entered the store looking for the suspect and a struggle ensued. The suspect was able to twist Sergeant Bigus' arm towards Sergeant Bigus, causing his firearm to discharge, striking himself in the stomach.
