Summary: |
Patrolman William Holmes was shot and fatally wounded while walking his beat with his partner on Christmas Eve.
Officer Holmes was searching for two gunmen who had just robbed a citizen. When Officer Holmes spotted the armed offenders on the street, he attempted to place them under arrest. One gunman resisted, displayed a revolver, and fired. Officer Homes was struck and mortally wounded; his partner was also wounded. Other officers responded and killed the first suspect, however the second suspect escaped.
On June 22, 1925 a murder suspect who had been involved in the killings of lawmen Conrad, Dunigan, and McParlin was hanged in Washington DC. The suspect claimed to have committed 12 murders, including a policeman in Chicago, possibly Officer Holmes.
Patrolman Holmes had been assigned to 2A District and is buried in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois.
